Water care

Diarrhoea, cholera, typhoid and hepatitis can all be caught through contaminated water. They can also be largely avoided by taking simple precautions.

Bullet If in doubt sterilise the water with disinfectant tablets.

Bullet Only use bottled water, preferably carbonated, which has a tamper proof bottle top or comes in a sealed container.

Bullet Avoid ice unless you are certain it is made from safe water.

Bullet Avoid foods or drinks containing ice eg milk shakes, cocktails. n In suspect areas use bottled water for cleaning teeth.

Bullet Hot tea or coffee is usually safe, as is wine, beer, carbonated water, prepackaged or bottled fruit juices and soft drinks.

Bullet Avoid or make sure you boil unpasteurised milk.

Take care in and around water

Water-based activities are often enjoyable but they can also be hazardous, especially for children. Fatal accidents or serious injuries often result from people being surprised by sudden changes in water conditions.

Bullet Children should always be supervised by an adult who is a good swimmer.

Bullet Never leave young children unattended by any stretch of water. This includes swimming pools and even paddling pools.

Bullet Make sure water is deep enough for safe diving.

Bullet Stay near the shore. Even the calmest of waters can be deceptive.

Bullet If sailing, water-skiing, wind-surfing, jet-skiing, canoeing or some similar water-based activity, always wear a life jacket and make sure that adequate medical facilities are readily available.

Bullet Do not swim after drinking alcohol or eating a meal.

Bullet Remember to do some gentle muscle stretching or warming up exercises before swimming to avoid cramps.
