Make sure you have travel insurance that covers pregnancy

Travelling when pregnant is usually very safe.

Precautions that need to be taken are much the same as if you are not pregnant. However there are one or two important factors that need to be taken into account.

If you are unsure about how you are being treated then ask to be helped to contact your named consultant or midwife in the UK.

Most airlines do not allow travel if the woman is 34 weeks or more pregnant. Check with your airline before you go.

Bullet   Check the facilities at your destination in case of future emergency. If you are particularly at risk take advice from your midwife, obstetrician or GP prior to travel.

Bullet  Holiday immunisations need to be reviewed. Those involving live vaccines are best avoided. Consult your obstetrician or GP prior to travelling.

Bullet It is useful but not essential to take any medical notes with you to your destination, together with a suitable translation of them.

Bullet Do not miss any routine investigations, particularly in the first thirteen weeks of pregnancy.

Bullet Anti-malarials are generally safe, but ask your pharmacist for advice.

Bullet It is important when travelling to ensure adequate fluid intake and exercise.
