TRAVEL HEALTH
CYSTITIS
The
bladder lining can become inflamed and irritable due to
infection. This leads to wanting to pass urine often, a
burning sensation when doing so and in some cases bloody,
cloudy or smelly urine. In more severe cases, the infection
can spread to the kidneys and result in fever, pain in the
back or lower abdomen, sickness or vomiting. Cystitis is
more common in women.
Holiday (Honeymoon) Cystitis
Pain in passing water is a common short term problem during
holidays for many women. The urethra can become sore and
give symptoms similar to true cystitis. As a rule, antibiotics
will not be required in these cases. Using a lubricating
gel and changing your sexual position (to avoid friction
at the urethral opening) are simple and effective ways of
relieving 'holiday' cystitis.
