A PRACTICAL GUIDE TO SELF-CARE
Self-care
means knowing if, when and how quickly you need to consult
a doctor or another healthcare professional such as a pharmacist
or a nurse.
For
certain health problems it is feasible to help yourself
or your family directly. By taking quite simple actions
you may be able to either prevent the problem in the first
place or help treat the symptoms. As a result you may not
need to call on the health service with every minor complaint.
Practising self-care can help you, your family
and friends receive prompt, effective treatment.
This
web site allows you to find descriptions of a number of
commonly occurring medical complaints and advice about what
you can do yourself. In addition there is information about
when and how quickly you should consult a doctor or a health
professional.
The
What should I do?
programme has been developed by RTFB
Publishing to help you decide whether self-care
can help you. If you are a health professional or would
simply like to know more about other aspects of the What
should I do? programme then use the other buttons in
the left hand frame to improve your understanding.
Simply
use the search facilities to identify the medical problem.
The Health
Search facility on this site now features new health
guidance for students and young people.
The Travel Health Search facility
on this site now features new travel health guidance for travellers
and holidaymakers.

Note
The
medical advice available on this Web Site is tailored
to reflect advice commonly
given to patients by the majority of professional
Primary Carers in the UK. The advice, which
is reviewed and updated on a regular basis, may
well be different to that offered by medical professionals
in other countries. Always check with your local
medical professionals to determine the most appropriate
course of action for your own medical problem.
The webmasters of this site
cannot give medical advice on an individual's health
questions via email.
If the advice contained in this web site does not
answer your problem we recommend you contact a local
medical professional such as a GP or pharmacist.
